ARENA CLOSURES DUE TO COVID-19 OUTBREAK

Hello Fellas! In case you have not heard already, the City has closed all arenas due to the Covid-19 threat until further notice. This will mean the last regular season game, and year end tournament are now cancelled. Obviously the health and safety of the community is top priority, and I understand the City's decision at this time as Canada and the World aggressively try and stop the spread. I will keep you updated regarding the status of the golf tournament in May as we draw nearer. Please hang on to all Jerseys and socks for now until this is over, and i will ask for your help in making sure we get them all back in time for next season. I apologize having to deliver this unfortunate news and only hope you and your families stay healthy during this crazy time.

KCOHL UPDATE

Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there! I just wanted to give a quick recap from our AGM last week. Jason Taylor and I were re-elected to our second and my final 2 year term as President. As I recap our season I hope to ease any concerns some you may have had. It was a tough first half of season with the Memorial going down but despite that were able to play some extra days and times we would not have normally played. This only left us about a game or two short depending on the team. I wish to thank Roger Deatrich for managing the schedule especially during that tough stretch! As you know we are a league that like to give back to our community and this year is no exception. On June 4 I again had the privilege of awarding two deserving MBSS students our annual  KCOHL scholarship awards in the amount of $1250 each. We also had another successful golf tournament raising $5430 for charity and we will be topping that up to $8000 for two local charities once again. This year will be $5000 to the Cranbrook Food Bank which will make up for missing them at Christmas and $3000 will be donated to the Cranbrook Street Angels. I want to thank our incredible sponsors and to all those that donated and supported this special event. Thanks to Paul Whittingham, Tom Pungor and the great staff at the Cranbrook Golf Club for hosting each year. Finally, online registration is now active for the 2019-2020 season so get signed up and enjoy the rest of your summer. You will be happy to know that league fees will remain at $375 for the upcoming season and $50 for spare list. With the ice gone we should get more games than ever so something to look forward to next season. In person registration will begin middle of August at Players Bench.

Thank you all for your patience and understanding this past season!

Just a note that I have a Joe Fresh navy blue jacket from our banquet someone left behind. Also check your hockey sticks as someone may have grabbed a white Warrior stick of Mark Swirksy's instead of their own. You can email me regarding both items and will get them returned.

Year End Tournament Mar 29,30 & 31

Hello guys, we are in the final month of the season and getting closer to our year end tournament. Roger has added an extra day of games on March 24 in the middle of spring break for all those who are around and wanting to get that extra skate in before the main event. As in past years we will be getting the March 30th dinner tickets to members soon with extra tickets being available for spouses or dates at a cost of $30 per ticket. We are also asking all teams to come up with at least 3 prizes each for the banquet night. We will be posting the year end schedule on website very soon. Same rules and format as last year.

On another note for all those wondering about the food bank drive we missed at Christmas, we have decided to make them our first primary donation at this year's Charity golf tournament in May. I hope you all have a great final month of the season and we will see you on the ice!

2018-2019 KCOHL SEASON NEWS

Hey Fellas!! I know you are wondering what's going on with the upcoming ice situation. I did receive a letter from the City that some rec user groups may be affected by the recent breakdown at the Memorial Arena.

I am confident that even with this unfortunate turn of events we will still get a season in. It is likely that we may encounter some possible time changes for the first part but do not think we should lose many.  Obviously I will confirm my predictions as soon as I am given an update from the City.

Keep the registrations coming as we are down to the last couple weeks before the Sept 15 deadline. For now all we can do is move forward and see what happens. I will update all news as soon as it becomes available.

Thanks!

Schedule Update for March 18 & 25
Hi Guys, I have just been informed today that our times and location for the next two weekends has been changed. Please note that we will play in the Memorial starting this Sunday March 18, and all the games are moved up one hour earlier. So if you played at 2:45 at Western Financial place it will now be 1:45 at Memorial and as with the rest of the games also. This also applies to the March 25 ice times. Sorry but the City advised us today that since Ice did not make playoffs they want to shut down the ice plant early in WFP.  I will update all the upcoming games on Website so you will get the proper notification e-mails. Thanks!

The spare list has been updated from the information that we have on the website.

These are people who have paid their insurance and completed all their paperwork.

Spares are reminded that they have to pay 20.00 per day played.  If you come out to spare and you decide to play more than one game, great but you must pay the 20.00 for the first game played.

Thank you all for your support!!

AGM This evening - The Heidout 7:30pm

As I sit here trying to compose what will be my last president's report for the AGM. The thing that surprises me the most is the speed at which the past 4 years have disappeared.

Running this league in concert with the other members of the executive has been an enjoyable past time over the previous 4 years. We've accomplished a lot. The most enduring, and the accomplishment I'm most proud of is the KCOHL website and online registration.   League members have told me that it will be hard to top that one, but I'm sure something will come along.

The roots of the website should actually be credited to my predecessor, Dave Standing who started the process of a simple email list, which grew into the idea for automating more of the league function. Which led to Wayne and I looking for a website or some method to send reminders and to try to eliminate hours of phone calls. Dave was also instrumental in developing the charitable aspect of our league, knowing that we help people in our own community with our donations just by doing something we love is probably the most gratifying aspect of the role of president.

In that vein, this afternoon I discharged my final duties as president of the KCOHL With a presentation of a cheque in the amount of $3500.00 to Cranbrook Kidsport. Last week I presented a cheque in the amount to the Youth Impact Centre.  The choices of these charities were made by YOU because in reality, this is YOUR league. You just asked me to help keep it running for a while.

Does everything I've tried work perfectly? Nope. However its the system we have right now and until the next great idea comes along (Which I know is out there)

I'm fortunate enough to work in an industry that by its very nature is constantly changing, its something I'm used to and something that I find natural. There are many, who unlike me are less accustomed to change. Chasing the next great thing, or constantly making changes to how we do things does NOT have to be the goal of the next executive. Consolidation of what we have, correcting some of the little things that I didn’t (like getting the schedule right). Taking things slow is not a bad thing. Sometimes it might be the right thing. That will be for the next executive to decide.

As I leave the position of president and move into the position of "Past President" I'm grateful for the friendship and wise council of Wayne Walmsley and Brandon Cavener without whom the running of the league would have been much more difficult and I probably would have gotten myself in much more trouble than I did.

To the new executive, I offer you the experience of my years as president, my advice when asked, my support for your decisions and my silence when none of the above is required.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Butt

Inland Kenworth WIns the KCOHL Trophy

After two hard fought semi final games in which both teams needed overtime to defeat their opponents. Genex Marketing and Inland Kenworth played a fast paced (for us) and entertaining final game. Genex jumped out to an early lead in the first period, with Inland making little inroads during the first frame.

A penalty laden second period saw each team take advantage of the power play and score, however at the end of regulation time the score was still tied and a 5 minute over time was required.  With only seconds remaining Jake Blackmore was able to score the winner resulting in Inland Kenworth defeating Genex Marketing and claiming the KCOHL trophy (And the coveted flasks) for the 2016-17 season.

In what could be his last game as a member of the KCOHL, Barry Mechalchuk, in speaking about the game and the  loss was quoted as "Pass me a beer will you?"

Thanks to all for a great season, special thanks to everyone who has helped out with organizing the events, JJ, Swirsky, Wilf Davis, Bill and Linda Smith. An especially huge thanks to the VP of the league Brandon Cavener and Wayne Walmsley without both of these two gentlemen the league wouldn't be what it is today.

The Golf Tourney is scheduled for May 27th at the Cranbrook Golf Course. Details will be sent out and also posted to the website.

Looks like we did it again!

A great effort by the KCOHL, Netted 1180.00 in cash and a yet to be determined number of pounds of food for the Cranbrook Food Bank. Judging by the line up of people there today to pick up, the volunteers were very appreciative of our efforts.

The Beer Fridge and 3 and a half Dozen beer were won by Team A&W.

Mark Bostock won the Bed in a bag, Kindly donated by Ken Bridge from Bridge Interiors.

A big thank you to Bob Cartier from A&W and Trevor Gordon from Boston Pizza. You guys always come  through with great  food for the league. and it is Greatly appreciated.

Randy Rundberg deserves a big shoutout as well for bringing Meat and Cheese Trays, and also for ensuring that all the peperoni sticks were adequately cleaned.

Mark Swirsky and Jesse Yosinaka organized the beer fridge giveaway, thank you to them.

Of course no listing of people to thank would be complete with out a VERY big thank you to Wayne Walmsley, who besides keeping me sane and grounded, never fails to assist in all that we do.

Enjoy the Break over Christmas we'll see everyone back on the ice in January.

Annual Christmas Foodraiser and Party. This Sunday Dec 20th 3-9pm

Being a member of an elite gentlemen's hockey club (and were not sure which is elite, because I don't think its the hockey) has its social benefits.

One of which is the annual Christmas party and FoodRaiser for the Cranbrook Food Bank. Join us on Sunday Dec 20th starting after the first game for fun and food in Dressing Room 5.

Last year we raised the equivalent of 1200 Lbs of food for the food bank. Lets see if we can top that this year. They can use food, but also are VERY happy with cash donations.

For those of you planning to stay and have a few drinks please arrange for a safe ride home.

Oops! Games NOT cancelled on November 30th and Dec 7th
Does anyone know how much I dislike making up the schedule. ?  LOTS! that's how much.

I was inputting the second half of the season for our schedule and read the Kootenay Ice schedule incorrectly.

The games scheduled for November 30th and December 7th are still going ahead. You will receive your email reminders as normal.

The schedule on the website for your team is now the official schedule barring any other changes.

My apologies for any confusion.  Hey so if you showed up you could always drink beer. Remember, we're not here for the hockey.

Spare list has been updated

The spare list has been updated from the information that we have on the website.

These are people who have paid their insurance and completed all their paperwork.

Spares are reminded that they have to pay 20.00 per day played.  If you come out to spare and you decide to play more than one game, great but you must pay the 20.00 for the first game played.

Thank You!

We made it! (just)
With a lot of prodding and chasing, we were able to get everyone registered for the city sports pass system.

It really is imperative that people see to getting these passes early in the year.  So unless something happens in the next 12 months, after you register for hockey and you need a pass, just go straight to the arena and get one.

These are the city's rules, not ours and as long as we continue to use their facilities we are subject to their rules. And I don't see anyone digging a hole to start building a private arena.

Thanksgiving Sunday (October 12 )
Thanks everyone for the response on the survey.  The response was great and from that we requested a cancellation from the city for this Sunday.  Unfortunately we did not get our request to them in time to make the two week advance for cancellations.

So what does this mean?  It means games go ahead this sunday (sort of)

What we thought we would do is run the first three games

2:45 pm Heritage(blue)  vs Rella (White)

4:15 pm Culligan (baby poop green)  vs Ron's Collision (black)

5:45 pm Country Hardwood (black) vs Bridge Interiors (white)

People who are wscheduled to play in the later games are invited to come out and "spare" at any of the 3 early games and drink a few beers (or vice versa)

With the number of people who said that they couldn't make it, we should have just the right numbers for some fun old timer's hockey. If you are going to come out and play, just show up and we will make it work.

Remember, we're not here for the hockey.

Thanksgiving Sunday games survey
With more than 80 members voting,

the vote tally was 53 votes or a 60% majority  to cancel the games for the Sunday of the thanks giving weekend.

We have made this request to the city but because we are inside the two week advance window we may NOT be able to cancel the games.

We will send out the results of our request as soon as we get them and adjust the schedule accordingly.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote. It's gratifying to me to have more people use the website in the second year.

Cheers,

Sports Pass Requirements
A reminder to all players. The city of Cranbrook requires all users of recreational facilities to either be a city resident (proof required) or the holder of a valid sports pass.

The costs to the league are in the $8,000 range which is an amount we cannot afford given our current rate structure.

The deadline for buying a sports pass or showing proof of residency is October 14th. We have been guaranteed by the city that there will be NO extensions.

Emails reminders have been sent to people who require passes or proof of residency.

These conditions of use are set by the city, not the league, and we have no choice but to enforce these requirements.

November Tournament!
KCOHL Tourney.pub (170.50 K)Hello chubby, slightly out of shape hockey hacks.  It is that time of year again when we begin to plan for our upcoming November Tournament which will be taking place November 21-23 at the Memorial.  If you would like to play for one of the two league teams please email David Standing at davids2@telus.net. If you are a league member who is also part of those powerhouse teams Sudz Budz or Ftroop or Ice Agers or Colonels or Bullets please let me know if you will be attending.  I have included the Tournament poster for your reading delight.  We are planning to have a social on Saturday night at which we will watch hockey, play pool, lie about our hockey prowess and bond in ways only men can understand and women cannot.  I hope to see all past participants come out and welcome some new teams from out of town.  Have a great weekend, see you Sunday.

Its a great day for hockey
After weeks of planning, a terrific crowd of guys out for the Draft and chasing down the jerseys, its Game time!

Today is the Season opener for the KCOHL as we raise the curtain on another great season of Old timers hockey.

Each of us plays the game for our own reasons, the exercise, the camaraderie, the beers and we bring our own passion for the game.  This season lets commit our selves top playing the game as hard as we can, as fairly as we can and with respect for ourselves, our teammates, the officials and our opponents.

Jersey and Socks Call

We have received lots of the kerseys back Thanks to all those to were kind enough to wash and store them for the summer.

If you are getting out your gear and see team socks and Jerseys for league teams, please bring them (washed, of course) to your game on Sunday so we can see about getting all the jerseys and socks to their respective teams.

Most teams are close to full, and we are still getting a few registrations which we will place on teams.

How will we do that?

Alphabetically for the teams that are short players.

So please look for Jerseys and socks while getting your gear out.

Thank you for a great Draft evening
The teams are drafted and all the players that might have not been on rosters have been corrected.

All players should login to the website and ensure that their contact information particularly their email addresses are correct as our system relies heavily on email.

There are some spaces available both on the spare list and for regular players, but registration will have to be done manually, Players wishing to play must have a signed waiver and fees paid before going onto the ice.

Wishing everyone a successful season

Jersey call.
Do people know here the various team jerseys are?

We are having trouble locating them. If you have the jerseys for a particular team, please let us know. Or if you know who has them but they may not have gotten this email, please have them contact a member of the executive.

Wayne, Brandon, Bruce Pope or Me.

We have the Ron's Collision Jerseys, but aren't sure of where the rest of the jerseys are.

Thanks for your help everyone.

Old Timers Tourney in Invermere
We have been contacted by the Invermere Old Timers to participate in an upcoming fundraising tourney. We have been hoping to get teams from Invermere to attend our November Tourney so this is a great way for us to start the ball rolling.

The tournament dates are from the 11-13 of April, so it could be your last dose of hockey until September. Each team is guaranteed 3 games, there are appetizers planned for the Saturday evening and there are beers after each game.

Cost per team is 750.00 (50.00 per person based on 15 skaters and a goalie) Their plan is to have a competitive division and a recreational division.

By April 15th I will only be available to provide some basic organizing, however If a group is interested in putting together a team, collecting the appropriate fees and arranging transport we can arrange jerseys.

The Invermere guys have said that they can arrange the schedule so tha tnay teams from Cranbrook could commute so you don't have to stay overnight in Invermere. However, since its shoulder season up there, some deals may be able to be worked out either right in Invermere or in Fairmont.

This would be a perfect opportunity for the "new Shooters" from the F-troop tourney to put a team in and represent us.

I'm hoping that a group will put together a team so we can extend the invitation to Invermere for the Fall.

My Hockey league has a fundraising problem

The KCOHL once again shows that its better to give than receive. With the help of our Special guest player, the KCOHL raised $763.00 worth of in kind donations and $635.00 in cash donations for the Cranbrook Food Bank!

That's just under $1400.00 for the local food bank.

The league executive would like to send out a HUGE thanks to the league sponsors and members who so generously contributed to the Food Raiser.  Thanks to Bob Cartier at A&W, who not only sponsors a team but was so kind to donate the Chicken.

We also can't forget Ken Bridge (mostly because he won't let us) and his generous donation of a fridge for the give away.

Thanks also to Trevor at Boston Pizza who provided us with pizza.

Giving back to our community makes being a part of this league so great.

Christmas Party and Food Raiser

Mark the date!  December 22nd for the annual KCOHL Christmas Party and Foodraiser !

Many people make donations to the Cranbrook Food bank before Christmas, but the need still exists long after the holidays. By bringing our donation to the food bank closer to Christmas we can help feed families through the cold winter months.

The Food bank is always appreciative of cash donations as well. In many cases local grocers have specialty programs for the food bank that lets them stretch the money much further than you and I can. SO Cash donations would be accepted as well.

Its in the Schedule as a Fundraising event.

We will have pizza, Chicken, other snackies, and Great company to help us all get in the holiday spirits.

A reminder that those of you planning to imbibe during the festivities should make plans for a safe ride home.

Sad News
It is with great sadness to say that we have lost a great friend and a long term member of the KCOHL. Jim Graham lost his fight with cancer on Oct 31/13. Jim always loved to play hockey and enjoyed the guys and the beer afterwards. He was always there to help and participate in any club activities. Please, let's have a beer or two and remember our good buddy and fellow hockey lover, Jim Graham.  The funeral is this coming Saturday at 2pm at the Alliance church.
